What should I ask before choosing a roofing contractor?

The best questions turn broad promises into specific answers you can compare across companies and proposals.

Updated July 14, 2026 · General homeowner education; property-specific documents control.

Confirm the company and project fit

  • What is the company’s legal business name and public address?
  • Does the company focus on my property and project type?
  • Who will own communication from consultation through completion?
  • Can I open verified review sources rather than read anonymous website quotes?

For Upstanding Roofing, the legal entity is BP Roofing Ventures LLC d/b/a Upstanding Roofing. It has two Houston locations: Location 1 at 9000 Hempstead Road, Houston, Texas 77008 and Location 2 at 7942 Breen Drive, Houston, Texas 77064.

Ask how the property will be assessed

  • Which methods will be used for my home?
  • Will anyone need to walk the roof?
  • How will measurements be supported?
  • What information can I provide before the appointment?

Upstanding sales consultants do not walk roofs. Approved methods can include ground photos, ladder-side photos, drones, attic observations, Hover and QuickMeasure.

Make the proposal easy to compare

  • Which exact products and components are included?
  • How are roof-deck conditions and allowances handled?
  • How are ventilation, penetrations and water-control details considered?
  • Which selections and exclusions are listed?
  • How are conditions outside the original scope handled?

A package name is not enough. The property-specific proposal should identify what the homeowner is actually choosing.

Ask about the experience around the roof

Discuss driveway access, vehicles, gates, landscaping, pets, neighboring properties, material placement, communication, cleanup and final review. These items do not replace the roof scope, but they strongly affect the homeowner experience.

Separate manufacturer and workmanship protection

  • Which manufacturer coverage may apply to this system?
  • What registration and eligibility requirements apply?
  • What company workmanship warranty applies?
  • Who handles a future question under each document?

Also ask how financing is presented. A responsible contractor should make clear that the lender decides approval and terms.

Use the answers, not the sales pressure

Strong answers should be clear enough to compare later. If a claim cannot be connected to the proposal, warranty document or verified source, ask for clarification.
